It's always a challenge deciding where to leave our rig when taking our much needed breaks from RV life. We need to plan this a few months in advance being that this involves finding a location that is close to an airport we can fly out from. Bigger cities are always a preferance in order to ensure more cost efficient flights and storage facilities. After our stint in Banff we had the option to either return to Montana or head further west into Washington. We decided Montana would be best this time around based on the flights we found from both destinations. Billings presented the best flight and storage options at the time so that's what we rolled with. We also hadn't been to Glacier and this was an opportunity to check it out on our way down.
I had originally eyed a KOA campground in Billings but was not able to book online and by the time I called the site that fit our rig was no longer available. We usually know what we get with KOA since they are pretty consistent with delivering clean sites and fun amenities for the kids. We were bummed to miss out on staying there but found a campground in the very near vicinity that turned out to be even better.
Yellowstone River RV Park & Campground is a campground surrounded by trees providing a very peaceful setting specially if camping at one of the sites backing up to nature. The roads are paved and sites are gravel which is much better than dirt when getting the RV ready for storage - easier to take stuff out to reorganize and clean properly. This is a very family friendly campground which our kids fell in love with. They have a pool, hot tub, green areas, and a playground which our kids enjoyed with other campground kids. The office has some snacks for sale including ice cream and all sites have picnic tables and fire pits which were perfect for the cool spring evenings.
Since KOA was right around the corner we drove over to see if we'd stay there instead when returning in the fall but while KOA had some fun amenities like themed playground, mini golf and giant chess, it lacked the big trees and therefore the feeling of being in nature offered at Yellowstone River. This was reason enough to confirm our current choice.
We stored our rig at family owned Billings Storage Solutions which offered good pricing and seemed secure enough with its controlled gate access and surveilance system. Now we can only hope mice and other critters do not like roaming this property and do not even consider making themselves at home in our RV. Fingers crossed, we'll return to a prestine RV.
